"빚졌습니다." "신세졌습니다." 를 영어로 하면

오늘의 표현은 바로 "I owe you." 입니다. 

A: I put the extra copy of the book on your desk. 

B: Thanks, I owe you one. 

A: 책 복사해서 책상 위에 뒀어.

B: 고마워. ??

A: Let me pay for your drink. 

B: Thanks a lot, I owe you one.

A: 술은 내가 살게.

B: 고마워. ??

그런데 위의 두 가지 예문에서 문자 그래도 "빚을 졌다."라고 말을 하면 좀 많이 어색하죠? 물론 한국어에서도 가끔 이 빚을 어떻게 갚죠?라는 식의 말을 하긴 합니다만.. 

그리 자주 쓰이지는 않을 수도 있겠네요. 그냥 고맙다. 신세졌다. 꼭 갚을게 정도로 생각하셔도 됩니다. 

 

I feel like I owe you everything because you were there when I had nothing.

이 표현을 사용하는 방법은 I owe (someone) + (something)  혹은 owe to (sb or sth) 등이 있습니다.

ex) I owe my life to you.

ex) This new theory owes much to Einstein's Relativity Theory.

ex) (At a store) How much do I owe you? = How much do I have to pay? = How much is it.
